Paragliding in Vietnam’s Northwest is at its best in two iconic locations: Khau Phạ Pass (Mù Cang Chải) and Hàm Rồng Mountain (Sa Pa). Both offer breathtaking scenery, especially during the golden rice harvest season. In this detailed guide, we compare these two tandem paragliding sites—covering altitude, flight time, scenery, accessibility, weather, and price—so you can decide which destination suits you best.

Altitude & Flight Duration
The Khau Phạ launch site in Mù Cang Chải is located mid-pass at 1,200m above sea level. The landing zone sits at 800m, a height difference of about 400m. On an average day, with a descent rate of 1 m/s, your flight lasts about 400 seconds—just over 6 minutes. This is on the shorter side compared to other Vietnamese sites (for example, Đồi Bù near Hanoi and Sơn Trà in Đà Nẵng both have about 600m of altitude difference and average flights of 10 minutes).
The Hàm Rồng launch in Sa Pa sits at 1,750m—Vietnam’s highest takeoff point above sea level. The landing zone at the bottom of the Mường Hoa Valley (Tả Van) is at 1,000m, for a 750m altitude drop. On an average day at 1 m/s sink rate, your flight lasts about 750 seconds—over 12 minutes.
Of course, at both sites, on sunny days pilots can find thermals to extend the flight. But with all else equal, Sa Pa gives you longer airtime.
Score: Sa Pa 9 – Mù Cang Chải 5
Views & Scenery
Mù Cang Chải’s site is perched on one of Vietnam’s “four great passes,” looking down into a wide, bowl-shaped valley. Sa Pa’s Hàm Rồng site is much higher, with views over the long Mường Hoa Valley: on one side the Hoàng Liên Sơn range crowned by Fansipan (the “roof of Indochina”), and on the other Sa Pa town and Hàm Rồng Mountain itself.
Each place has its own charm—call it a “9 versus 10” situation. If you prefer soft, tranquil scenery, Mù Cang Chải may appeal more. If you’re drawn to majestic, dramatic, even heart-stopping vistas, you’ll likely prefer Sa Pa.
Score: Sa Pa 9 – Mù Cang Chải 10
Activities Beyond Paragliding
Although famous, Mù Cang Chải offers few tourist activities besides paragliding. Visitors here used to be mostly backpackers or niche travelers. Accommodation and dining options are limited and often pricey for the quality.
Sa Pa, by contrast, is a major tourist hub. Beyond paragliding, you’ll find endless entertainment and sightseeing. Hotels range widely in price and standard, and thanks to a supply boom in recent years, room rates are generally very good value for money.
Score: Sa Pa 9 – Mù Cang Chải 5
Convenience & Accessibility
The Khau Phạ launch site sits right off National Highway 32. The road from landing to takeoff is mostly on this highway with good pavement and mild gradients—accessible by almost any vehicle. A full 10 points for convenience.
Hàm Rồng’s advantage is its proximity to Sa Pa town—only about 20 minutes to reach the takeoff point. Even Sơn Trà in Đà Nẵng, though inside the city, takes about the same or longer from downtown. However, some sections of the road to Hàm Rồng are rough, and the last 300m requires a 4WD vehicle—hard to reach on your own. Fortunately, FlySapa provides round-trip transfers from any hotel in town or the Mường Hoa Valley.
Score: Sa Pa 8 – Mù Cang Chải 9
“Parawaiting” – The Weather Factor
Weather in the Northwest is complex and changeable, unlike lowland sites (Đồi Bù in Hanoi, Lương Sơn in Hòa Bình, Linh Trường in Thanh Hóa). Both Mù Cang Chải and Sa Pa can deliver “four seasons in a day” with sun, rain, and fog shifting unpredictably. When flying at either site, keep a flexible attitude and be ready to wait for safe conditions. The paragliding companies here are professional and always put safety first.
Because Mù Cang Chải’s valley is broader and lower, its weather can be a little less “temperamental” than Sa Pa’s.

Chấm điểm: Sa Pa 5 – Mù Căng Chải 6
Flight Cost
Both sites charge roughly the same: about 2.5 million VND on weekends and 2.2 million VND on weekdays. This is slightly higher than the national average because running paragliding operations in the Northwest is much more challenging and costly than at lowland sites. But compared with abroad, both are still inexpensive—for example, in Europe a tandem flight costs about €150 (over 4 million VND).
During the rice harvest, Mù Cang Chải’s tandem flight price can surge to over 3 million VND. In Sa Pa, transfers are already included in the flight ticket, which slightly lowers your total cost.
Score: Sa Pa 7 – Mù Cang Chải 6
